Step into the past and explore the science of what makes us human. The Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University offers K–12 school groups an engaging, hands-on journey through millions of years of human evolution. Our programs are designed to inspire curiosity, spark questions and bring the science of our shared history to life.

Field trips can be:

  • In-person visits to the IHO campus
  • On location at your school
  • virtual

Field trip activities may include:

  • Crash Course in Human Evolution – A lively, age-appropriate presentation that walks students through key milestones in human evolution, from upright walking and stone tool use to big brains and symbolic behavior.
  • Guided Tour of IHO and Research Labs – Students explore the labs where scientists study fossils, ancient tools, and other evidence of our origins, gaining a behind-the-scenes look at cutting-edge research.
  • Flint Knapping Demonstration – Watch as stone tools come to life in real time, showing how early humans created tools that shaped survival.
  • Hands-On Ancient Art and Craft Activities
    • Ostrich Eggshell Bracelet Making – Students learn about personal ornamentation and try creating replicas of one of the world’s oldest known forms of jewelry.
    • Ochre Painting – Students experience early symbolic behavior by painting with natural pigments used by ancient humans.

Our programs are led by undergraduate and graduate students from ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change and other affiliated departments. Presenters are trained to work with a range of ages and learning styles, ensuring each student has a positive, motivational experience while interacting with college students who are passionate about STEM and anthropology.

How to schedule on-site or off-site visits
Field trips are available by appointment throughout the academic year. Programs can be customized to fit grade level and curriculum needs. Whether your students are studying evolution, archaeology, or anthropology, an IHO field trip brings these topics off the page and into their hands. Please contact Aubree Morrissey to request information on scheduling a field trip. We look forward to working with you to plan your experience with IHO and to understand your content preferences.
