Discovery of jaw by IHO team sheds light on early Homo

A fossil lower jaw found in the Ledi-Geraru research area, Afar Regional State, Ethiopia, pushes back evidence for the human genus—Homo—to 2.8 million years ago, according to a pair of reports published March 4 in the online version of the journal Science. The jaw predates the previously known fossils of the Homo lineage by approximately 400,000 years. It was discovered in 2013 by an international team led by Arizona State University scientists Kaye E. Reed, Christopher J. Campisano, and J Ramón Arrowsmith, and Brian A. Villmoare of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Drilling project secures top NSF funding for Earth sciences

A 2013 National Science Foundation Frontiers in Earth Systems Dynamics (NSF-FESD) grant program has provided funding for The Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project (HSPDP) led by the University of Arizona, with lead IHO researchers Chris Campisano, scientific project manager for the HSPDP, and Kaye Reed. The research looks at the geology of paleolakes in eastern Africa to study ancient climate change and ultimately what that might tell us about how climate affected the development of human ancestors. HSPDP received nearly $5 million from the NSF-FESD program with $1.2 million coming to ASU. Read more at ASU News

Most apes eat leaves and fruits from trees and shrubs. Four new studies published simultaneously in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences—two of which include IHO researchers William Kimbel and Kaye Reed—show that human ancestors expanded their menu 3.5 million years ago, adding tropical grasses and sedges to an ape-like diet and setting the stage for our modern diet of grains, grasses, and meat and dairy from grazing animals. In studies of carbon isotopes in fossilized tooth enamel from scores of human ancestors and baboons in Africa from 4 million to 10,000 years ago, a team of two dozen researchers found a surprise increase in the consumption of grasses and sedges—plants that resemble grasses and rushes but have stems and triangular cross sections.

A Hello to Arms: Early and enduring microlith technology
gave modern humans the edge
Nature Print edition cover

11.22.2012
The modern human lineage appeared in Africa between 100,000 and 200,000 years ago, but the roots of modern human technology are much less clearly defined. Curtis Marean and colleagues describe a previously unrecognized advanced stone tool technology from Pinnacle Point in South Africa, dating back to around 71,000 years ago. Previously observed signs of such activity have been less definitive, seeming to appear and disappear — perhaps because of poor sampling — but the current work indicates that these tools persisted for some 11,000 years. The technology is dominated by heat-treated stone 'bladelets' that are thought to have been components of composite tools. The technology provides strong evidence for advanced projectile weapons such as spearthrowers, or even bows and arrows. The authors speculate that weapons made using such bladelets may have been pivotal to the success of modern humans as they left Africa and encountered Neanderthals.

Tree Climbers, Wood Eaters, and More: The Top 10 Human Evolution Discoveries of 2012

12.07.2012
Published in the journal Science on November 16, 2012, IHO-affiliated doctoral student Benjamin Schoville, researcher Kyle Brown, and postdoctoral researcher Jayne Wilkins (with University of Toronto at time of publication) and Michael Chazan, reported on a discovery that documents the earliest evidence for early humans attaching a stone tip to a wooden shaft to use as a spear. The date, at 500,000 years ago, is 200,000 years earlier than previously thought. The research was widely covered in international and national media and was included in this "Top 10" both the Smithsonian Magazine online and in Scientific American's year end review of the most fascinating discoveries of 2012. The above Nature research was also included in Smithsonian's "Top 10" stories.

Tracking Lineage Through a Bramble New York Times

05.10.2011
Those stars among the hunter-gatherers of fossils related to human origins, Donald C. Johanson and Richard Leakey, returned last week to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the scene of a bitter televised brawl between the two 30 years ago. They were older, presumably wiser and definitely much more temperate. The title of the program, “Human Evolution and Why It Matters: A Conversation with Leakey and Johanson,” signaled that this was not to be a re-enactment.

On May 5, 2011, famed paleoanthroplogists ASU professor Donald Johanson and Richard Leakey came together at the American Museum of Natural History in New York to discuss human evolution, its overwhelming evidence in the extant hominid fossil record, and why understanding our evolutionary history is of such critical relevance today.

Lucy Had a Spring in Her Step Science

02.10.2011
The petite 3.2-million-year-old skeleton called Lucy is one of the most famous and most complete of human ancestors. But she was found without her foot bones, so researchers have debated whether she walked as we do or retained some apelike adaptations for climbing in trees that altered her gait. Now, a 3.2-million-year-old foot bone from a member of Lucy's speciesAustralopithecus afarensis, reveals that this hominin was no flat foot: It had already evolved arches and a stiff midfoot similar to living humans. That means if Lucy were alive today, she could fit in high heels or march for miles without breaking her feet. "This discovery puts the spring back into afarensis's step," says co-author Donald Johanson of the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University (ASU), Tempe.

A fossilized foot bone recovered from Hadar, Ethiopia, shows that by 3.2 million years ago human ancestors walked bipedally with a modern human-like foot, according to a report that appears in the Feb. 11 edition of the journalScience. The fossil, a fourth metatarsal, or midfoot bone, indicates that a permanently arched foot was present in the species Australopithecus afarensis. The report's authors include Carol Ward of the University of Missouri and William Kimbel and Donald Johanson of ASU’s Institute of Human Origins.

Two Arizona State University researchers conducting zooarchaeological and archaeometric analyses of four fossilized animal bone fragments found by the Dikika Research Project in northeastern Ethiopia—within walking distance of the discovery of the hominin skeleton “Lucy” (Australopithecus afarensis)—confirm that unusual marks on the bones were inflicted by stone tools. Their conclusion weighs in on findings reported in the Aug. 12 journal Nature, that A. afarensis used sharp-edged stones and a strong striking force to cleave flesh and marrow from large-sized animal carcasses some 3.4 million years ago.

Making Sense of New Discoveries in the Family Tree
04.08.2010 (reposted to ASU News 07.02.2010)
New fossil remains discovered in South Africa by Lee Berger of the Institute for Human Evolution at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in April 2010 may be a transitional species between “Lucy,” the 3.2 million-year-old fossils discovered by ASU Professor Donald Johanson, and our own evolutionary branch of the human family tree. Top national news outlets contacted ASU paleoanthropologist Bill Kimbel and Johanson prior to the announcement of the new discovery in the journal Science for expert analysis and evolutionary context. As founding director and current director of the ASU Institute of Human Origins, Johanson and Kimbel, respectively, are top, sought-after experts in the world in this field and among the first to be consulted on any new discovery.

Baby steps: Learning to walk, the hominid way
NPR.org (audio included)
07.12 2010
IHO Board Member Ian Tattersall tells NPR.org that "it makes sense that arboreal primates may have been ‘primed,’ for upright walking on the ground. I don't think you come down to the ground and decide it would be a really good idea to stand upright and move around," he says. "I think the only reason you would do it is because this is what came naturally to you in the first place."

New link in human evolution found in Ethiopia
San Francisco Chronicle sfgate.com
06.24.2010
Don Johanson quoted: But to everyone else interested in the discovery of new fossil evidence for the ancestry of the human lineage, he'll be known as “Lucy's great-grandfather.”. . . Donald Johanson, Lucy's discoverer and founding director of the Institute for Human Origins at Arizona State University in Tempe, called the “grandfather” report intriguing and, recalling the many recent discoveries of Lucy’s fossil relatives, said: “This is really a remarkable time in the history of paleoanthropology.” Johanson noted that although Lucy was tiny—about 3 1/2 feet tall—Kadanuumuu was much larger—about 5 or 5 1/2 feet tall. The size difference between Lucy, who lived 3.2 million years ago, and her “great-grandfather,” is known as sexual dimorphism and is true for humans today, although the wide divergence in size of the two fossils is typical of those early creatures that still bore more traces of their descent from the ape lineage, Johanson said.

Lucy's “great grandfather” found
msnbc.com
06.22.2010
Don Johanson quoted: That doesn't mean Australopithecus afarensis is out of the spotlight when it comes to studying human origins. Johanson said Lucy and her kin provide an "important reference for assessing other hominid species," in large part because so many specimens have been found over such a wide span of evolutionary time. Going forward, paleoanthropologists may well turn to Lucy, Kadanuumuu and other members of the species to unravel the deeper secrets of ancient human development.

Forest or savanna? U. geologists spar over ancestral human's home
Salt Lake Tribune
06.01.2010
Johanson quoted: An upright-walking primate could have done well on this expanding grasslands, spending a lot less energy covering the long distances necessary to find food and shelter in the absence of trees. But Johanson is convinced hominids evolved an upright posture while still inhabiting a partial arboreal setting. "It would have been much too dangerous for hominids to stand up in [savanna] with carnivores everywhere and announce they are on the menu," Johanson said.

Humans: Why They Triumphed
The Wall Street Journal
05.22.2010
Curtis Marean cited: Recently at Pinnacle Point in South Africa, Curtis Marean of Arizona State University found evidence of seafood-eating people who made sophisticated "bladelet" stone tools, with small blades less than 10 millimeters wide, and who used ochre pigments to decorate themselves (implying symbolic behavior) as long as 164,000 years ago. They disappeared, but a similar complex culture reemerged around 80,000 years ago at Blombos cave nearby.
