The Institute of Human Origins (IHO) has established a new research funding program for its faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students in the three Research Focus Groups, thanks to a generous donation made by David Deniger and Mara Michelle-Batlin.
These seed grants of up to $25,000 (for individuals or team(s)) are to enable researchers to develop innovative research ideas seeking to fill in gaps in the human story—biological, behavioral, and cultural. Well-developed proposals stand a better chance of attracting substantial external funding.
Submission and application instructions
Phase I: Applicants will fill out a two-page application form where they are asked to briefly describe their project including what makes it important, unique, and innovative for understanding human evolution and contribute to IHO’s research goals. The start and end date of the research and the requested amount of funding are also required. The Research Grant Committee will review each application and select proposals that will be invited to submit a full proposal for Phase II.
Phase II: Applicants selected for Phase II will be asked to submit a more in-depth proposal (six to eight pages, excluding references, tables, and figures) describing in detail the research goals, methods, anticipated outcomes, and intellectual merit. This committee will review the proposals and select the most competitive ones that will be recommended for funding and present them to the IHO Executive Board for final decision.
This program has two grant cycles:
Spring
Phase I — Deadline: November 15
Phase II — Deadline: January 30
Fall
Phase I — Deadline: May 1
Phase II — Deadline: August 31
